Christmas in Lago Colony

Those of us from Aruba know this image well; the refinery lit up at Christmas time with lights in the shape of tree.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night.

  1. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. Just remembering how we'd call Mom and wish her a Merry Christmas at midnight. Or she would call us first - and very competitive she was about this. MMH

  2. I remember the beauty of the cat-cracker tree from any point in the colony. A wonderful memory. Best wishes for the next year. Gary

  3. Ah, yes, Gary! The beauty of the catcracker was Christmas-time for us!

Bon Pasco i Bon Ana Nobo to the Lago kids of all ages and our foresighted parents who chose the Esso hardship posting on the tiny island, remote from the lands of their own relatives. We, who were born and raised on that very small island in the Caribbean, received a gift of a childhood no one else can comprehend or appreciate. Is that part of why we are so close, even now, over 45 years since we graduated from Lago High School? In my graduating class, so many of the 23 of us had been born in the Lago Hospital and we have no memories of not knowing each other. We have spent decades finding the others who had to leave before reaching graduation due to paternal job changes.

The triennial reunions at home in Aruba are treasured events that gather us back to where the wind knows how it should blow and the sea and the sky know how to be blue...familiar memories engraved in our souls. The water, itself, distilled from the sea, has made the Caribbean a part of our essence. My classmates know how much I love them and how much I love Aruba. Being a Lago Colony kid is something very special.

Your father was a part of why we were so well educated and your mother a part of why we love music. All of us respect the man who was our principal and our Algebra teacher! And we have Christmas memories of the pageant on the lawn of Lago Community Church directed by your mother.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to your parents and to all three of the Thompson kids and your families.
